About Us
Thank you for visiting our website. We hope you enjoyed your visit to the Riverboat Discovery
and El Dorado Gold Mine, or if you are planning a trip to Fairbanks, we invite you to enjoy our tours while you’re here.
In addition to a top-rated tour on the Chena and Tanana Rivers, you’ll enjoy a visit to the kennel of
the late Iditarod champion musher, Susan Butcher, and a stop at the Chena Indian Village. The late Captain Jim and his wife Mary Binkley began hosting visitors to Alaska on tours in 1950 aboard the Discovery, a boat Captain Jim built in his backyard. As the years went on and Alaska’s beauty became more well known around the world, the Discovery II and Discovery III boats were built to accommodate the number of visitors interested in learning the history of the interior; its rivers, its people and its history. Before or after your trip aboard the Riverboat Discovery, you’ll have an opportunity to visit Steamboat Landing, the largest family owned gift shop in the state. Inside Steamboat Landing, view or purchase hand-made Alaskan Native artwork, enjoy our world famous Captain Jim’s Gourmet Smoked Salmon or home-made Alaskan ice cream at the Captain’s Corner Specialty Café, or find quality Alaskan souvenirs and gifts at the lowest prices in Alaska. We happily feature “Made in Alaska” jewelry and pottery, along with specialty foods like birch syrup popcorn and delicious locally made mustards, syrups and jams.
Our family takes pride in Captain Jim and Mary’s age-old philosophy that visitors to Fairbanks be treated like family. We offer complimentary coffee
and freshly baked donuts and cookies to all, along with a no-fee ATM and flat rate shipping so that you can conveniently send your souvenirs home or send gifts to family and friends anywhere in the world.
Take a turn into Steamboat Landing – the treats are on us!
